InfoComm Shines

InfoComm Shines challenges InfoComm members to work together to benefit nonprofit organizations and raise visibility and goodwill for the AV industry. In 2005, the initial InfoComm Shines project included the donation of nearly $100,000 in AV products and services to the Helen Keller National Center. In 2006, the headquarters of Southface, an Atlanta-based non-profit organization dedicated to promoting environmentally-friendly practices, was selected as an InfoComm Shines project. The building, nearing completion, was scheduled to be the first LEED® Certified Platinum office building in the southeast United States.

This week, the ICIF Board selected the Walker School in Needham, Massachusetts, as its newest InfoComm Shines project. Recommended by Stewart B. Randall, CTS-D, of Communications Designs Associates, the Walker School is exploring potential uses of assistive communications technology for more effective classroom teaching of seriously emotional disturbed children and youth in the classroom.

Through InfoComm Shines, Walker School, a comprehensive network of special education and mental health services for hundreds of the most troubled children, adolescents and their families, will create a web-based communications system for use by Walker staff and families to conduct meetings, seminars, parental conferences and staff supervision. This will involve the development of basic video and graphics production. The project will also increase and enhance the instructional technology available to teaching staff in the Walker School. This will involve a partnership with one or more local Universities to employ graduate students to research and develop technology solutions for this population. During the study various technologies will be employed for evaluation and testing with the possibility of being incorporated into the Walker curriculum. An arts and technology curriculum at Beacon High School will also be developed and implemented with support from the companies contributing to this project.

So far, Extron, Crestron, Polycom, HB Communications, Vbrick, AMX, FSR and others have pledged their support. If you are interested in getting involved with this project, please contact Stewart B. Randall, CTS-D . If you are interested in submitting an InfoComm Shines project proposal, please complete an application.
