White Spaces Update

On November 4, 2008, the FCC approved the use of the "white spaces" — the TV channels that are not actually occupied by a broadcast station — to deliver wireless broadband internet and other services to consumer wireless devices. The FCC has now released its Second Report and Order and Memorandum Opinion and Order.

InfoComm has reference materials on white spaces from a variety of sources available at www.infocomm.org/whitespaces. In addition, Sound & Communications is presenting a VIEWpoint video webcast "Are White Spaces, 700MHz, DTV and FCC on a Collision Course?" this December and January. Three industry experts break down all the latest government machinations and explain how they will affect your business. Speakers include Jay Paul, CTS, VP Engineering/QA, AVI-SPL; Darren Cheshier, CTS-D, Systems Engineer, SKC; and Jerry Budge, Director, Marketing and Product Management, Blonder Tongue Laboratories. The series begins Monday, December 15, and can be viewed at www.soundandcommunications.com/viewpoint.

Standards

Draft Standards to be Available for Public Review

After a year of concerted standards development, the InfoComm Performance Standards Program is preparing to open up the first draft standard for public review. The public review period is an important phase in the development of standards that are submitted to ANSI. During this period, the first draft, "Draft Standard I", will be available for review electronically at www.infocomm.org/standards on or about December 19, 2008.

InfoComm members and the general public are encouraged to formally participate in standards development by reviewing the document and commenting. Public review and comment of developing standards is critical to the ANSI process of "openness" and "consensus," ensuring wide availability to the document and the opportunity for agreement or disagreement. Instructions explaining how to submit a comment are available online through the aforementioned link. Comments of positive support will also be welcomed, as the ANSI process seeks to ensure that there have been many "eyes" on the project.

This is your opportunity to play a role in the transformation of the audiovisual industry into a globally standards-based profession. The Performance Standards Steering Committee welcomes your involvement! If you would also like to participate as an expert contributor, email standards@infocomm.org.

This includes measurement of speech intelligibility over entire communication systems, evaluation of the contributions of elements of speech communication systems, and evaluation of factors that affect the intelligibility of speech. For more information, contact Susan Blaeser sblaeser@aip.org and please copy standards@infocomm.org.

The Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association (BIFMA) has written an "Educational Seating Standard Draft" and is looking for volunteers to work on a new standard for seating products for the educational market.
