The formula for calculating heat load is:

Total Btu = WE * 3.4

Where:

  •  WE = Total watts of all equipment used in the room
  •  3.4 = Conversion factor, where 1 watt of power generates 3.4 Btu of heat per hour

This formula does not account for the heat load generated by amplifiers.

In an AV rack are the following pieces of equipment:

  • Control system unit - 75W
  • Video matrix switcher - 30W
  • DVD player - 18W
  • Audio DSP - 30W

What is the total heat load in BTU of this equipment?

Step one:

Total all of the equipment watt usage to get the total power consumption.

75 + 30 + 18 + 30 = 153W

Step two:

Multiply by the conversion factor of 3.4.

153 * 3.4 = 520 BTU

In an AV rack are the following pieces of equipment:

  • Audio DSP - 30W
  • Video switcher - 45W
  • Control system unit - 50W

What is the total heat load in BTU of this equipment?

Step one:

Total all of the equipment watt usage to get the total power consumption.

30 + 45 + 50 = 125W

Step two:

Multiply by the conversion unit of 3.4.

125 * 3.4 = 425 BTU
